IKEA furniture buyback scheme – get up to 50% back on used furniture

Buying IKEA furniture is cheap and easy for most people… just a shame that building it all isn’t as easy!

My house has a lot of IKEA furniture including tables, drawers and bedside cabinets – and I only found out recently that you can actually return them in a used condition and get some money back.

So if you are getting new furniture, or want to get rid of your old IKEA furniture, there’s an easier option than putting it on Facebook Marketplace and waiting for a buyer.

Here’s everything you need to know and how it works.

What is in the deal exactly?

IKEA have something called a ‘buyback’ scheme, which allows you to take used IKEA furniture back to them and get some money back.

This only works on selected products in its range, so you can’t just take any old IKEA product back for a refund.

Generally, they accept items such as tables, chairs, shelves, chests of drawers, cabinets, bookcases and children’s products. You cannot bring back items such as beds, sofas and soft goods.

It can be in any condition too. If it’s still in good nick and you’ve looked after it, you’ll expect to get 50% of the item value back. So if it normally costs £100, you’ll get £50.

If it has a few scratches and dents, you’ll get 40% back. And if it’s got a lot of wear and tear, you’ll get 30% of the item value back.

To get started on the buyback scheme, you’ll need to request a buyback in advance on the IKEA website, finding the product you wish to return and stating the quality.

You’ll then be asked to take it back into store within 30 days, where they will assess the quality and give you some money back in the form of a gift card, which can be used online or in store.

Any furniture that you bring back in as part of the buyback scheme is recycled or resold – so it’ll go to a new home.

Why should I care?

This can be a really good alternative to just selling on social media sites that might be hit and miss.

If your IKEA product is listed as an eligible buyback product – it can be an easy win to getting rid of your furniture and earning money too.

The amount that you get back for your old furniture is much more than you’d probably get by selling yourself.

What’s the catch?

There are a few catches here. When you bring items back into store, they want them to still be fully assembled. So if you have a small car and a large table that you want to bring back – it might not be possible.

You’ll get the money back as a gift card to spend at IKEA, so it’s handy if there was something you needed (or wanted to fill up on meatballs), but could go unused if you don’t.

Only certain products are included too, so you may find you can’t bring your item of furniture back.

What other options do I have?

If you have bought something at IKEA, they do have generous guarantees and returns policies. Usually you have a year to return items for a full refund if you change your mind – so check that first, and you may be able to get all of your money back instead.

Where can I find out more?
